Here is how to get your CE in CINAHL:

After you type in the CE topic you are interested in, scroll down to look for the CE Module limit.  It’s below the research limit on the left side of the page.  Then click on the search button at the bottom of the page.

Here’s how to get your CE in Nursing Reference Center:

Click on the Contiuing Education tab. You can either search for a CE topic or browse through the list of topics.

Searching CINAHL Tutorials: These tutorials will show you how to do subject heading and keyword searches, how to combine your search terms, and how to apply limits.

Using the Folder in CINAHL Tutorials: These tutorials will show you how to export references into RefWorks, creating, editing, and sharing folders, and more.

Finding Full Text Articles Tutorials: These tutorials will show you how to find a full text article online, in print, and how to order articles the library does not own.

The tutorials are Flash files and are interactive.  Patrons will be prompted to click on various links throughout the tutorials.  The tutorials include audio and a closed captioning option.  They can be paused, fast forwarded, or rewound.

1. Add the citations you want to your folder.
2. Go up to the Folder icon towards the top of the page.
3. You will see icons for printing, saving, emailing, and exporting.  Select your citations.
4. Click on the printing, saving, or emailing icon. The Export icon will allow you to export your citations into RefWorks.
5. On the right side of the screen, make sure Current Search History is selected.  Then finish printing, emailing, or saving your citations.

Don’t want to redo your search?  After finishing your search, click on the Alert/Save/Share link which is located above your search on the main search screen.

Click on the Add Search to Folder link.  Make sure you have an account in CINAHL that you can save searches and citations to your folder. It will be under the section, Persistent Links to Searches.

1. Go into CINAHL.  Click on the Sign into Ebsco Host link at the top of the screen to sign into your account.
2. Click on the folder icon to create a custom folder in CINAHL.
3. On the left side of the screen, click on New next to My Folder.  Give the folder a name then hit save.
4. Run a search in CINAHL.  Click on the Add to Folder icon below each citation you want.
5. After you have selected your citations, click on the folder icon on the top of the page.
6. A list of your selected citations will appear.   Select all of your citations then click on the Move to button move them into the folder you created.
7. On the left side of the screen, click on the plus sign next to the folder’s name.  The word, Share, will appear.  Click on Share.
8. Enter the email addresses of the people you need to share the folder with.  You may also add a message, enter a new subject line, or use a passcode.  Leaving the Restrict Passcode to Single Use box unchecked means that each person will be sent a different passcode that can only be used once.  Unchecking the box means that everyone will get the same passcode.  EBSCO recommends that you send each person a different passcode for security reasons.
9. Click on the Invite button at the bottom of the screen to share the folder with your group.

1. Select the citations you want by clicking on the Add to Folder icon below each citation.
2. Scroll up to the Sign into My EbscoHost towards the upper right hand corner of the screen.
3. Login with your CINAHL account.  If you do not have one, create an account in CINAHL by clicking on the I’m a New User link.
4. Click on the Folder icon at the top of the page. You will see the citations you selected.
5. On the left side of the page, you will see a section that says My Custom. Click on the new icon to create a folder.
6. Name your folder then hit the save button at the bottom.
7. Select the citations you want to save then select the Move to button to move the citations to your new folder.

Don’t want Pre-CINAHL records included in your CINAHL search?  Click on the Exclude Pre-CINAHL limit in the Search Options link in CINAHL.

CINAHL Select, which was a collection of journal issues,  has been folded into CINAHL.  The UIC Library website will be updated to reflect these changes.

Where can you find your limits?  After running your search, click on the Search Options link on the right side of the page.  The limits will come up in a box.  Select the limits you need then hit the Search button at the bottom of the screen.

Always do your limits as your last step when searching. Why?  Because you may accidentally leave out the perfect article for your paper.

In addition to limits for English and a range of years are:

• Age Groups: range from infants to adults.
• Evidence-Based Practice: includes systematic reviews, clinical trials, meta analyses, qualitative studies, etc.
• Full Text: this limit may leave out articles we get from other vendors besides Ebsco. I recommend not using it.
• Inpatient
• Outpatient
• Peer Reviewed
• Pregnancy
• Research Article

Please note, that when you listen to the the DiMenna-Nyselius Library’s CINAHL podcast, “CINAHL” mentions that the citation coverage goes back to 1982.  UIC’s CINAHL citation coverage goes back even further to 1937.

1. After finishing your search In CINAHL, click on the Add to Folder link underneath the citations you need.
2. Click on the Folder link at the top of the page.
3. After making sure all the citations are selected, click on the Export icon.
4. Select Direct Export to RefWorks. Hit the Save button.
5. A RefWorks login screen should open.  Login to your RefWorks account.
6. You should get a message saying your references were imported into RefWorks.

Once you are done your paper, create your bibliography with the following steps:

1. Click on the Bibliography tab.
2. Select APA-American Psychological Association, 5th ed. as your output style
3. Select Format a Bibliography from a List of References.
4. Under File Type to Create, select either Word for Windows or Word for Mac, depending on which computer you own.
5. Select which folder your references are coming from.
6. Hit the Create Bibliography button.
7. If your document does not open up automatically, hit the download it link.
8. Your citations are now in APA format! Even though RefWorks is doing most of the work for you, double check your citations to make sure they are correct! Occasionally RefWorks will stick in a character that does not belong, incorrectly italicize or bold something, etc.  So make sure your citations are in the correct format.
