APA 6th Edition Output Style Available in RefWorks

RefWorks has added the APA 6th edition output style to RefWorks. To make this available on your own RefWorks account and in your Write N Cite account, do the following:

Log into your RefWorks account.
Click on the Bibliography tab.
Click on the pull down menu for the Output Style field.
From the Pull-down menu – select Output Style Manager.
Look for APA on the list and you will see several options for APA 6th ed.
Select the one you want and click on Add to Favorites (repeat as necessary)

Illinois Hospital Report Card Website Debuts

Today the Illinois Hospital Report Card Website has made its debut. This website will assist consumers in making better health care choices. Here is some of the data that is available:

volume and cost of services in hospitals and ambulatory surgery treatment centers,
quality and safety data,
nurse staffing data,
patient satisfaction surveys,
summaries and links to Illinois laws that ensure consumer protection.

Search boxes on the side of the page allow consumers to search by zipcode, the facility’s name, or by county. More information will be added to the website during the course of the year which will include the number of hospital-acquired infections for each facility.

Fall Break Hours at LHSU

The Library of the Health Sciences – Urbana will have different operating hours during Fall Break.

Friday November 20, 2009 The Library will open early for an M1 test and close early due to the start of Fall Break. 7:00am – 5:00pm.

Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd = Closed.

Monday November 23, 2009 and Tuesday November 24, 2009 = 8:30am – 5:00pm.

Wednesday November 25, 2009 = 8:30am – 4:30pm.

Thursday November 26, 2009 – Saturday November 28, 2009 = Closed.

Sunday November 29, 2009 the Library will resume regular hours. 1:00pm – 11:00pm.

Newly acquired HAPI Online: Hispanic American Periodicals Index

The Library acquired HAPI Online – Hispanic American Periodicals Index – with funds from the Library/IT Assessment.

Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) are expanding at UIC. In May 2009, the Board of Trustees approved the establishment of a Master of Arts in Latin American and Latino Studies. HAPI Online is a key source for supporting work in LALS. It provides authoritative, worldwide information about Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Hispanics/Latinos in the United States. Topics include current political, economic, and social issues plus Latin American arts and letters. Students who recommended HAPI Online praised its extensive coverage of Hispanic Americans and noted its value for dissertation research.

New CAM Database: Natural Standard

Do you need to find evidence-based information on CAM treatments? Try using UIC Library’s latest resource, Natural Standard. This database can be found on the Health Sciences Research Guide or the CAM guide. This database has a grading scale which it uses for evaluating CAM therapies for particular conditions, herbs and supplements, and diet therapies. It also has a section on patient education and a nutrition database.

Open Media Collection is on the Move

The “Open Media” collection at LHS-Chicago, which is mostly made up of videos, is being relocated from the first floor to the third floor. The collection will be located on 3rd Floor West near the sorting area.

Back issues and the most current issues are now available for free.

Contemporary Architecture in Warsaw exhibit in Daley Library

The Daley Library is hosting the traveling exhibit Contemporary Architecture in Warsaw, opening November 6, 2009.

Beginning in 1989, Warsaw experienced an intense period of design and construction of retail, commercial and residential buildings. Changing conditions within Poland and the availability of investment capital transformed the face of the capital city. The number of projects invigorated creative architectural design, and the buildings sparked wide interest and varying reactions of respect, admiration, and controversy.

The 20 buildings featured in this exhibit are among those that received awards in various competitions, many by the “Life in Architecture” competition, organized jointly by the city authorities and the editors of Architektura Murator, a leading architectural journal. Some were financed by public funding, some with private support.

The exhibit was organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago under the direction of Mr. Mariusz Gbiorczyk, Polish Consul.

Exhibit panels are on display on the first and second floors of the Daley Library. Visitors can see the exhibit all hours the Library is open.

Two New MedlinePlus Features

Last week, MedlinePlus released a new version of the A.D.A.M. Medical Encyclopedia which now has 400 new Patient Instruction pages. These pages have pre-operative information and instructions, discharge instructions, self-care instructions, and questions to ask your doctor. These pages are available in both English and Spanish and can be found by searching MedlinePlus and the A-Z index pages for the encyclopedia. They will also show up on the related encyclopedia articles’ pages.

The Dictionary section of the MedlinePlus has a tutorial titled Understanding Medical Words. The tutorial now has sound available. There are controls on the bottom left of each page to turn sound on or off or adjust the volume.

New Online Exhibit About the Cook County Forest Preserves

Learn the history of the Cook Country Forest Preserves and discover how preservationists ensured future generations access to some of Cook County’s greatest natural resources.
Most of the material in this exhibit <http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/fdpcc> comes from the Forest Preserves District of Cook County records at the Special Collections department of the Daley Library, at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This collection is scheduled to be open to the public in 2011. The library wishes to thank the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelly Foundation for their support in acquiring the collection and making this exhibit possible.
