Contemporary Architecture in Warsaw exhibit in Daley Library

The Daley Library is hosting the traveling exhibit Contemporary Architecture in Warsaw, opening November 6, 2009.

Beginning in 1989, Warsaw experienced an intense period of design and construction of retail, commercial and residential buildings. Changing conditions within Poland and the availability of investment capital transformed the face of the capital city. The number of projects invigorated creative architectural design, and the buildings sparked wide interest and varying reactions of respect, admiration, and controversy.

The 20 buildings featured in this exhibit are among those that received awards in various competitions, many by the “Life in Architecture” competition, organized jointly by the city authorities and the editors of Architektura Murator, a leading architectural journal. Some were financed by public funding, some with private support.

The exhibit was organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago under the direction of Mr. Mariusz Gbiorczyk, Polish Consul.

Exhibit panels are on display on the first and second floors of the Daley Library. Visitors can see the exhibit all hours the Library is open.

New Online Exhibit About the Cook County Forest Preserves

Learn the history of the Cook Country Forest Preserves and discover how preservationists ensured future generations access to some of Cook County’s greatest natural resources.
Most of the material in this exhibit <http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/fdpcc> comes from the Forest Preserves District of Cook County records at the Special Collections department of the Daley Library, at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This collection is scheduled to be open to the public in 2011. The library wishes to thank the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelly Foundation for their support in acquiring the collection and making this exhibit possible.

Daley Library open house on October 28

The Daley Library is hosting an open house on Wednesday, October 28, 4 – 7 p.m. to showcase renovated areas, new equipment, special exhibits, SMART group study rooms, and expanded services.

Visitors can view a Special Collections exhibit of early English books and a display that chronicles the history of the UIC mascot to our present-day Sparky D Dragon. Staff will explain mysterious parts of the library such as microforms and the film collection that circulates to i-card holders.

The open house includes food and prizes for a scavenger hunt.

Embellished Medical Title Pages at LHS-Chicago

A new exhibit at the UIC Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago titled “Embellished medical title pages: the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries” highlights decorative title pages from the rare book collection of the Special Collections department.

These extraordinary images are on view outside of the library administration office on the 2nd floor.

English in Print: from Caxton to Milton

The Special Collections Department at the Richard J. Daley Library invites you to a new exhibit, on view October 2-November 30, 2009.

The English in Print exhibit features 50 early imprints from the Rare Book and Manuscript Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The selections of 15th-17th centuries show the development of format, typography, grammar, and spelling.

Also on display are seven 16th and 17th century books about the medical sciences and natural history from Special Collections at the Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago.

The exhibit was made possible through the generous support of the Caxton Club and can be viewed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Saturday October 10 and 24, and November 14, 12:30-4:30 p.m. For information and directions, call 312/996-2742.

UIC Special Collections and University Archives Welcomes Chicago Metro History Fair Students & Teachers

More than 20,000 students in grades 6-12 discover their local history through the Chicago Metro History Fair each year. Working individually or in small groups, History Fair students explore libraries, archives, historical institutions, and their communities in search of sources that will help them answer their own historical questions and explain their topic’s historical significance.

The Special Collections and University Archives Department is pleased to continue its support of the Fair and National History Day, and has identified collections that will contribute to the primary source research for this year’s theme of “Innovation in History.” For a downloadable PDF list of sources, click here.

Electronic journals records upgraded in library catalog

The UIC Library upgraded records for more than 50,000 electronic journals in its library catalog (UICCAT).

All titles listed in the Journals page now have records in the library catalog.

Special Collections and University Archives Closed Saturday, August 8th

The Special Collections and University Archives Department at the Richard J. Daley Library will be closed Saturday, August 8th for the beginning of the summer session break. The department will resume its Saturday schedule August 27th.

New Library Web site launches July 4

The UIC Library will launch its newly redesigned Web site on July 4, 2009.

The Library utilized patron surveys and usability testing to design a site with easily scanned pages, simplified terminology, clear navigation, and a clean graphic appearance.

Beginning on July 4, users will be redirected to pages on the new site from several pages on the current site. Users are encouraged to provide comments and suggestions via the feedback link on the new site.

UIC Hockey Records Now Available

The UIC University Archives is pleased to announce that the records of the
UIC Hockey Program are now available for research. The University of
Illinois at Chicago Circle, as it was then called, first fielded a varsity
hockey team in 1966. UICC competed in the Midwest Intercollegiate Hockey
League — composed of Illinois colleges — and won back-to-back league
titles in 1968 and 1969. In 1970, the UIC hockey team left the local
league and began competing against other independent college-division
teams from Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Left wing Clive
Wang was UICC’s first All-American in 1970. In 1982 the UIC Flames hockey
team joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, an NCAA Division I
conference, and played games at the UIC Pavilion. Although the hockey
team finished within the top five several times, the program was
discontinued in 1996.

The records of the Hockey Program include media guides, player
biographies, statistics and game summaries as well as photographs. A
