APA 6th Edition Output Style Available in RefWorks

RefWorks has added the APA 6th edition output style to RefWorks. To make this available on your own RefWorks account and in your Write N Cite account, do the following:

Log into your RefWorks account.
Click on the Bibliography tab.
Click on the pull down menu for the Output Style field.
From the Pull-down menu – select Output Style Manager.
Look for APA on the list and you will see several options for APA 6th ed.
Select the one you want and click on Add to Favorites (repeat as necessary)

Illinois Hospital Report Card Website Debuts

Today the Illinois Hospital Report Card Website has made its debut. This website will assist consumers in making better health care choices. Here is some of the data that is available:

volume and cost of services in hospitals and ambulatory surgery treatment centers,
quality and safety data,
nurse staffing data,
patient satisfaction surveys,
summaries and links to Illinois laws that ensure consumer protection.

Search boxes on the side of the page allow consumers to search by zipcode, the facility’s name, or by county. More information will be added to the website during the course of the year which will include the number of hospital-acquired infections for each facility.

New CAM Database: Natural Standard

Do you need to find evidence-based information on CAM treatments? Try using UIC Library’s latest resource, Natural Standard. This database can be found on the Health Sciences Research Guide or the CAM guide. This database has a grading scale which it uses for evaluating CAM therapies for particular conditions, herbs and supplements, and diet therapies. It also has a section on patient education and a nutrition database.

Open Media Collection is on the Move

The “Open Media” collection at LHS-Chicago, which is mostly made up of videos, is being relocated from the first floor to the third floor. The collection will be located on 3rd Floor West near the sorting area.

New RefWorks, EndNote, & Reference Manager Guide

Need help with using RefWorks or EndNote? Sandy DeGroote, the Scholarly Communications Librarian & Associate Professor, has created a RefWorks, EndNote, & Reference Manager Guide. This guide has a summary of each bibliographic management program and links to helpful guides and websites for each one. It also has links to websites which will explain the differences between RefWorks, EndNote, and Reference Manager.

New Look to PubMed

You may have noticed PubMed has a new look.

Over the past year (or so) they’ve been working on and refining this new
interface to PubMed. At first glance it may seem as though some features
have disappeared. Fret not, everything is still there, but it might take
some time to find and get used to where they are now.

The one feature I feel has received the biggest ‘cover-up’ is setting
limits on a search. That function has been absorbed into PubMed’s
“Advanced Search” screen. So, if you conduct searches in PubMed and want
to set limits on those searches, click the ‘advanced search’ link just
above the search box.

If you have troubles with this new interface and need some assistance,
please contact the Library at your convenience and we’ll do our best to help!

New Digital Images Guide

Peter Hepburn, the Digitization Librarian and Associate Professor at Daley Library, has created a Digital Images and Resources Research Guide. This guide has links to mostly UIC-based collections of images related to UIC and Chicago. There is also a medical images section that has links to databases which contain images. A rights/permissions section details how to acquire permissions for using images from these collections.

Embellished Medical Title Pages at LHS-Chicago

A new exhibit at the UIC Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago titled “Embellished medical title pages: the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries” highlights decorative title pages from the rare book collection of the Special Collections department.

These extraordinary images are on view outside of the library administration office on the 2nd floor.

This exhibit was made possible by the generosity of Sidney J. Blair, M.D. in partnership with the University Library. Please call 312/996-8977 for information and directions.

English in Print: from Caxton to Milton

The Special Collections Department at the Richard J. Daley Library invites you to a new exhibit, on view October 2-November 30, 2009.

The English in Print exhibit features 50 early imprints from the Rare Book and Manuscript Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The selections of 15th-17th centuries show the development of format, typography, grammar, and spelling.

Also on display are seven 16th and 17th century books about the medical sciences and natural history from Special Collections at the Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago.

The exhibit was made possible through the generous support of the Caxton Club and can be viewed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Saturday October 10 and 24, and November 14, 12:30-4:30 p.m. For information and directions, call 312/996-2742.
