APA 6th Edition Output Style Available in RefWorks

RefWorks has added the APA 6th edition output style to RefWorks. To make this available on your own RefWorks account and in your Write N Cite account, do the following:

Log into your RefWorks account.
Click on the Bibliography tab.
Click on the pull down menu for the Output Style field.
From the Pull-down menu – select Output Style Manager.
Look for APA on the list and you will see several options for APA 6th ed.
Select the one you want and click on Add to Favorites (repeat as necessary)

Newly acquired HAPI Online: Hispanic American Periodicals Index

The Library acquired HAPI Online – Hispanic American Periodicals Index – with funds from the Library/IT Assessment.

Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) are expanding at UIC. In May 2009, the Board of Trustees approved the establishment of a Master of Arts in Latin American and Latino Studies. HAPI Online is a key source for supporting work in LALS. It provides authoritative, worldwide information about Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Hispanics/Latinos in the United States. Topics include current political, economic, and social issues plus Latin American arts and letters. Students who recommended HAPI Online praised its extensive coverage of Hispanic Americans and noted its value for dissertation research.

New CAM Database: Natural Standard

Do you need to find evidence-based information on CAM treatments? Try using UIC Library’s latest resource, Natural Standard. This database can be found on the Health Sciences Research Guide or the CAM guide. This database has a grading scale which it uses for evaluating CAM therapies for particular conditions, herbs and supplements, and diet therapies. It also has a section on patient education and a nutrition database.

New medicine journal: Science Translational Medicine

Science Translational Medicine is a new journal first published online Oct. 7, 2009. UIC users have full access rights plus you can create a personal login to save your articles in personal folders, save searches and participate in peer-to-peer networks.

Science and related journals and knowledge environments also include the weekly publication Science, Science Translational Medicine New!, Signaling Transduction and Science of Aging knowledge environments.

New Chemistry Database: Reaxys

Reaxys is a new interface that unifies the well-known Beilstein, Gmelin and Patent Chemistry databases. In addition, Reaxys incorporates journal literature (1771 – present) and patent literature (1869 – present) along with search, analysis and workflow tools.

ScienceDirect scheduled downtime for this weekend

Register for SciFinder Scholar Web version by November 16

The UIC Library now has access to the latest version of SciFinder Scholar in its new format, SciFinder Scholar Web (SFWeb) version. Users must register for SFWeb with their UIC email accounts by November 16, 2009, to continue to use SciFinder Scholar. SFWeb can be used with the UIC proxy server so it will no longer be necessary to use a VPN connection from home.

To register for a SciFinder Scholar Web account, please go to:
1. Library home page
2. Choose “Databases A-Z”
3. Select “S”
4. Select “Scifinder Scholar – Web Version Registration for ALL users”

Once you are registered the link to log into SFWeb is at the same location.

You may also need to download the Java Plug-in for structure searching.

Mental Health

Access is also available for Psych Evidence Matters, an evidence-based tool. This new tool can be found by clicking on the JBI COnNECT + link on the left side of the screen.
