On March 20, 2009, Michelle Obama dug up a patch of the South lawn – the first step in making a White House vegetable garden. The image is reminiscent of victory gardens during World War II, and the message is quite clear: eat healthy, eat local, grow your own to help sustain the health of our environment and the health of our children.

There are now and there have been wonderful community garden projects all over the world. For all those interested in following Mrs. Obama’s lead here are some valuable resources:

The UIC Library has built several useful tools into external Websites like Google Scholar, Facebook and Del.icio.us. Here are instructions on how to implement them:

1. LibX

LibX is a widget that allows you to search UICCAT from anywhere on the web. You just place it into your browser toolbar and voila!
http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/lhsc/libx.shtml

2. Goolge Scholar (scholar.google.com)

Set your Google Scholar preferences to link to UIC journal article holdings. There is an option to choose the library holdings you wish to find with your scholar search. In order to link any article or book results from your Google Scholar search to our holdings, select University of Illinois at Chicago.

3. del.icio.us

A del.icio.us page of helpful research bookmarks is currently under development. As of April 4th, there are 34 bookmarks, and it is growing everyday. http://del.icio.us/uiclibrarian .

4. Add the UIC Library search application to your Facebook page:
http://apps.facebook.com/uiccatalog/

The Media Resources Center at the University of California at Berkeley has made available online a 1965 debate between the late William F. Buckley and the late author, James Baldwin. Buckley was a national figure from the time he founded the conservative “National Review” in 1955 at age 29.

The UIC Library lists 45 titles of the 54 titles authored by Buckley, the first being God and man at Yale: the superstitions of academic freedom, published in 1951, and the most recent being Rake: a novel, published in 2007. In the UIC University Library “The National Review” is available in print format from1955 and electronically from 1975. The CNN article referenced below gathered some of its information from the electronic resource Contemporary Authors Online, an electronic resource accessible through the library Website.

View the “Debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley, October 26, 1965. Sponsored by the Cambridge Union Society, Cambridge University.” The topic of the debate was “The American Dream is at the Expense of the American Negro”. [Requires Windows Media Player or Flip4Mac ]

Excerpted from the MRC blog:

On February 27, 2008, William F. Buckley, conservative author, journalist, TV commentator, and all-around pundit died at 82 (SEE CNN article for details ). For those of us who came of political age in the 60s and 70s in the embrace of the New Left, Buckley was something of a right-wing anti-Christ. We loathed his patrician accent and showy erudition; his quirky mannerisms and his maddening condescension. But mostly, we hate him for his infuriating habit of glibly bashing everything we held sacred.

Now, forty years later and from the perspective of political developments in the last few decades, Buckley is looking better and better. Even if one still disagrees with his politics and social viewpoints, Buckley’s wit and intelligence, his commitment to civil and informed discourse must be acknowledged and at least grudgingly appreciated.

In other interviews when he was asked to further explain his quote, the following exchange was made:

When do you think that kind of artificially intelligent search will happen?

CS: I think that understanding language is kind of the last frontier in artificial intelligence, and then talking to a computer will be just like talking to a reference librarian, because they will both be equally knowledgeable about the world and about you. The big difference and this is where the search pets come in, is that the reference librarian will understand emotions and other non-factual information that even a fully intelligent computer may have trouble with. In terms of timing, I typically say about 200 to 300 years. I think it is probably closer to the 300th year end of it. But if it ends up being closer to the 200th year, I would not be around in any case, and I will not be able to have anyone gainsay me.

Support for embedded cues: LibX places cues in web pages you visit if your library has resources related to that page. Whenever you see the cue, click on the link to look at what the Library has to offer. For instance, book pages at Amazon or Barnes & Noble will contain cues that link to the book’s entry in UICCAT. Cues are displayed at Google, Yahoo! Search, the NY Times Book Review, and other pages. [View a demo]

LibX supports OCLC’s xISBN service: you can find a book, given an ISBN, even if the library holds this book under a different ISBN.
