Special Collections and University Archives Closed Saturday, August 8th

The Special Collections and University Archives Department at the Richard J. Daley Library will be closed Saturday, August 8th for the beginning of the summer session break. The department will resume its Saturday schedule August 27th.

Access to CSA Illumina Restored

A legal dispute between Sprint-Nextel and Cogent Communications made the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts database (CSA Illumina) temporarily unavailable to some customers including the UIC Library.

Service was reinstated on November 2.

The Cambridge Scientific Abstracts Internet database service is an electronic resource that provides access to numerous databases covering major areas of research, including materials science, environmental sciences and pollution management, biological sciences, aquatic sciences and fisheries, biotechnology, engineering, computer science, sociology, art history, and linguistics.

EBSCO Makeover

This month, EBSCO databases debuted its redesigned web site. EBSCO is the provider through which you access such databases as CINAHL, Health Source, and Alt-Health Watch.

The updated version includes all of the search features you are used to, plus some new ones. Some new features include: a complete overhaul of Visual Search, a simplified Basic Search screen, and a pop-out window when choosing preferences. There are far too many to mention in this post, so we encourage you to play around in the new interface and see the changes for yourself.

ProQuest Service Interruption

Access to CSA Illumina, CSA MultiSearch, and CSA Illustrata will still be available; however, response times may be slower thannormal during this upgrade. No other products or services will beaffected by this upgrade. Full service should be restored by 12:00PM EDT, Saturday, July 21.

ATLA Service Interruption

In order to improve response time for searches in their products, ATLA (American Theological Library Association) will perform significant network upgrades on their systems during the afternoon of Monday June 4th, beginning at 5:00 p.m. EDT. Interruptions in the ATLA Religion database access may occur between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 EDT.

Library Open Longer Hours

The Richard J. Daley Library and the Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago will be open longer hours for the remaining weeks of the Spring semester.

Effective April 1st the Daley Library, which now closes at 9 PM Sunday through Thursday, will close at 11 PM on those days.

On April 15^th, the Library of the Health Sciences will extend its hours, closing at 1 AM, instead of at 11 PM, Sunday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday hours will remain unchanged.

“We are pleased that we are able to respond to students’ requests for longer library hours,” stated University Librarian Mary Case. “The recent survey conducted by the library as well as meetings with student groups all showed that limited hours was one of users’ chief complaints about library services. We hope that extending library hours will allow more students to take advantage of the library and the many services and resources we offer.”

Library remains open during snowstorm

The Richard J. Daley Library, The Library of the Health Sciences (Chicago) and the Science Library will keep regular hours for Tuesday February 13, 2007.

Use of University Wireless Network

Library patrons who use the University’s Wireless Network must upgrade their Odyssey Client to Version 4.5 by February 1^st.After that date it will be impossible to use the University’s Wireless Network without this upgrade. This upgrade only affects Microsoft Windows users.

The new version may be downloaded from ACCC’s E-Sales Store (netid required). For further assistance users should contact the Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC).

Library News Blog Back Up

In early December access to the server on which the UIC Library News blog resides malfunctioned. Although the server was quickly rebooted, there were severe problems which prevented us from updating the newsletter. The News-blog has now been moved to newer equipment and is again operational.

Blog Server Down

At around 16:10 on December 3rd access to the blog server rivendell was not possible any more. We did a reboot of the server at 16:55, the server was back online at 17:05.

Unfortunately, the reboot revealed severe file and database corruption. We are working on salvaging both and moving the server to newer equipment.

We apologise for the inconvenience we caused by this.
