Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) are expanding at UIC. In May 2009, the Board of Trustees approved the establishment of a Master of Arts in Latin American and Latino Studies. HAPI Online is a key source for supporting work in LALS. It provides authoritative, worldwide information about Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Hispanics/Latinos in the United States. Topics include current political, economic, and social issues plus Latin American arts and letters. Students who recommended HAPI Online praised its extensive coverage of Hispanic Americans and noted its value for dissertation research.

UIC students and researchers now have access to data from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. The Roper Center is the largest archives of public opinion information. The UIC Library/Information Technology Assessment Committee recommended purchase of this resource, and the Library was able to license it using revenue from the Library/IT assessment.

From your workstation on- or off-campus, access Roper Center. The first time you enter the Roper Center web site, you will be asked to register your email address, name, and institutional affiliation.

You now have on-demand access to the full datasets required to conduct bivariate and multivariate analyses on archived surveys using RoperExpress. The direct link to the catalog of datasets permits searching by keyword, date, country, and survey organization.

The Roper Center also offers access to iPOLL, a comprehensive database of 500,000 questions and answers asked in the US since 1935.

These combined services permit you to locate datasets rich in data of interest to you and then using point and click technology, download the documentation and data files for the studies within minutes. For US data, iPOLL permits you to locate questions (and the answers of the full sample) and then to link to the data files and run secondary analysis. Support for these services is available using rcweb@ropercenter.uconn.edu.

For help or feedback, please contact Becky Lowery, Maps & Data Services Librarian.

Background

ARTstor is a non-profit initiative, founded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with a mission to use digital technology to enhance scholarship, teaching and learning in the arts and associated disciplines. The roots of ARTstor, as well as its name, can be traced to JSTOR, another Mellon-founded non-profit initiative. What JSTOR is to electronic journal access, ARTstor is trying to be for digital images – aggregating collections, making them accessible, and preserving a reliable and comprehensive archive of images for educational purposes. It is a Web-based image resource which libraries may acquire via a one-time institutional purchase fee plus annual licensing fees. The UIC Library is sponsoring a trial of the full version of ARTstor this Fall. At this time, Purchasing and Legal Counsel are reviewing our permanent license.
