Want to save time typing up your paper? Install Write-N-Cite on your computer. Write-N-Cite, a RefWorks utility, allows you to insert in text citations into your paper from references you exported into RefWorks. Then Write-N-Cite creates your bibliography for you based on your references.
To download Write-N-Cite, login to RefWorks then click on Tools. Select Write-N-Cite then follow the instructions for downloading. There are two versions of Write-N-Cite:
- Write-N-Cite III is the latest version and is compatible with Microsoft® Word 2003 or later.
- Write-N-Cite v.2 is for Microsoft Word 2000 and up.
Once Write-N-Cite is installed, it should show up in Word in either the toolbar or under Tools.
- Click on the Write-N-Cite icon in Word.
- Login with RefWorks account info. If you are using Write-N-Cite from off campus, you must use the RefWorks group code, RWUIllChicago.
- When you want to insert an in text citation into your paper, go to Reference. Click on Cite next to the reference you want to use. The in text citation will be inserted into your paper in brackets. Do not edit the brackets. These are place holders for the citations.
- Save your document.
Finished your paper? Now you can create your bibliography based on the citations you used from Write-N-Cite. Here is how you do that:
- Click on the Bibliography option in Write-N-Cite.
- Make sure you have the correct bibliographic citation format (ex. APA). Click on Create Bibliography.
- The Write-N-Cite screen should say Your document has been processed in APA – American Psychological Association, 5th Edition. style (or whatever style the document is in) with no errors. The brackets should be replaced by parenthesis. The bibliography will appear at the end of your paper.
- If you use Write-N-Cite v.2, your final document will open separately with the word final in your document’s title.
