This profile is of Rebecca Raszewski, the liaison in Chicago.
How long have you been working at UIC?
I have been working at UIC for about two months.
When did you get your degree?
I got my Master’s in Information Science in 2003 from Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Why did decide to become a librarian?
I had wanted to be a librarian since high school. I had always loved to read and wanted to learn how to help people find what they needed. I never thought I would be working in a health sciences library though. I was an English major and always assumed I would work in a public library. A few months after graduating from college, I was fortunate to work at the Moore Library at MCP Hahnemann University (which later became Drexel University). I worked in almost every department in the library which gave me great experience for my professional career. I love being a nursing liaison and have enjoyed working with the nursing students and faculty.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Helping UIC patrons find the information, article, or book they need. I also like working at the reference desk. I never know how my shift will go. Will it be quiet? Will I get a really tough search question? I enjoy working with Web 2.0 tools such as blogs and wikis and am looking forward to contributing to the UIC Library website. I also like doing collection development activities like recommending books for the collection and maintaining the collection.
What is your favorite blog or website?
One of my favorite blogs is called iLibrarian. The blogger keeps it current and is always posting interesting topics. Some things she has written about recently are how students prefer their lectures to go and Web Search Strategies in Plain English.
What to do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy reading and writing. I also like shopping, going to the movies, and cooking, which I wish I had more time to do. I also am a Phiadelphia sports fan and do my best to listen to or watch the games from afar. Go Phillies!
