Banned Books Read-Out! Sept.29 in Pioneer Square

Libraries celebrate Banned Books Week every year and hold events to highlight free speech and the right of each individual to read all viewpoints on all issues. This year, Banned Books Week will be observed Sept. 29 through Oct. 6.

One event in Chicago is the Banned Books Week Read-Out! at the Pioneer Plaza (on Michigan Avenue between the Tribune Tower and the Chicago River) on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. Local Chicago celebrities join several acclaimed authors to read passages from their favorite banned and challenged books. Admission is free. See YouTube for more information the Read-Out!

Some events during the week are taking place in virtual worlds. The American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom is working with the Alliance Library System, the Alliance Second Life Library, http://tapinformation.com/, and the new ALA membership group Virtual Communities and Libraries to provide an interactive experience centered on Second Life, MySpace, and Facebook.
