UIC Library offers patrons free access to full text on the Internet

Searching Google Scholar for access to full text articles and books is growing in popularity as online availability of scholarly materials increases; however, there is a barrier when some publishers try to charge for downloaded articles and chapters. All current UIC students, faculty and staff have the right to get articles for free by accessing thousands of subscriptions paid for by the UIC Library. All it takes is one simple step!

In the Google Scholar initial search screen, click on Scholar Preferences and add a link to show your affiliation with the UIC Library. (This step is not necessary on campus). A “UIC Options” link will appear whenever an article or journal belonging to the UIC Library is available online. Once changed, your preference is stored as a cookie on your browser for future sessions.

The UIC Options link will first send you to verify the article is available, then to authenticate your netid/password, then out to the publisher’s gateway to download the desired document. The authentication step is necessary for an off campus user in order to make your location recognizable to the publishing server as belonging to a member of the UIC community.
