Caribbean Stories: The Art of Life Series

The UIC Library has a wealth of information resources that reflect the rich cultural heritage of many Chicago area communities. The Library wants to ensure that community residents know about its special collections and have the opportunity to utilize these materials.

One of its treasures is the H. D. Carberry Collection of Caribbean Studies, 1,000 volumes that represent Caribbean life and culture in poetry, literature, politics and history.

In its first major external programming project, the UIC Library will present Caribbean Stories: The Art of Life, a series of six programs that highlight the Carberry Collection and bring this historical archive to life with contemporary Caribbean artists and scholars. Hosted at community centers, libraries, and other public spaces, the program will bring the excitement of the collection to the public through engaging presentations by locally based scholars and artists.

The series began with the first program held on March 7, featuring Nancy Cirillo, Professor Emeritus, UIC, providing historical and social context to the book jacket art of the Carberry collection. Other events will take place throughout 2006, in the communities throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

This series is funded by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council.
